Theatre Technician

Part-Time/Seasonal

The Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre is located on the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus in Camrose, Alberta.  This 584 seat automated fly house is a joint venture between the U of A and the City of Camrose that offers an unmatched performing arts facility to the community and region.

The Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre functions as a road house, presenting a wide range of professional and semi-professional events including: dance performances and festivals, professional theatre presentations, corporate and community events, University of Alberta functions, film screenings and many live music performances.

The facility boasts a host of sustainability features, including 100% LED lighting and a photovoltaic array on all 4 sides of the fly tower.

Camrose is a vibrant city of 18,000 people located only a 50 minute drive southeast of Edmonton.  Camrose is also an easy 45 minute drive from the Edmonton International Airport.  Camrose is the perfect small city, with charm and close access to a major urban centre.

Primary Function

To provide excellent technical support to the artists, clients, and community users of the Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre during our spring rental and dance festival season.  The successful candidate will have experience working with live sound. They will also have experience working with theatrical lighting. They will have a well-rounded experience in all areas of technical theatre that meet the requirements of the diverse users of our facility.

Duties

  • Complete setup and strike for events.
  • Assist in all areas of theatre production support including:
    • Sound – Sound setups, basic mixing, band setups, sound checks
    • Lighting – Hang, focus and lighting board operations.
    • Flies – Rigging and operation of an automated fly system.
    • Carpentry – Basic stage carpentry.
    • Video – setup and operations of projection systems.
    • Setup, strike, and restore facility/venues as required by each show and event.
  • Provide guidance and support to user groups and community members using the theatre.
  • Ensure all working areas are well maintained, clean, tidy and organized.
  • Assist in the training and development of local volunteer members of the Technical Volunteer Company.
  • Assist with the occupational health and safety of co-workers, volunteers, students and audience members.
  • Work as part of the event crew comprising the Facility’s Heads of Department (Audio, Lighting), Casual Technical Staff, as well as members of the Backstage Volunteer Company.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Stagecraft diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution and/or 2 years relevant work experience may negate the need for a diploma.
  • Professional experience working in a wide range of related production areas including but not limited to sound, lighting and rigging.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimum direct supervision, which compliments their capacity to work with other team members.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities and achieve deadlines.
  • Experience working with community and semi-professional arts groups an asset.
  • Experience working in a road house facility with a wide variety of events an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a safe and timely manner.
  • Ability to work at heights, climb ladders, lift 50 pounds, and skill with power tools.
  • The candidate must have strong communication skills; good time management skills, flexibility and approach each situation with diplomacy.
  • Willingness to work a variety of hours depending on event times.
  • Experience working with digital live sound mixing consoles an asset. Venue uses DiGiCo sound consoles.
  • Experience with the ETC EOS family of consoles an asset.
  • The ability to mix on stage monitors.
  • Demonstrate a sensitivity to the SPL levels they subject the theatres audiences to.
  • Experience with projection and audio-visual technologies an asset.
  • A good sense of humour is a useful asset.
  • Valid class 5 Drivers License.
  • Fall arrest, aerial lift, and first aid certificates an asset.

Details

Hourly Rate: $25.00 per hour.

Part-time/Seasonal – averaging 28 hours per week or more.

Start Date: 9-March-2018

Projected End Date: 16-June-2018
