As Remembrance Day approaches, the Jeanne & Peter Lougheed Performing Arts Centre invites our community to gather for an extraordinary, deeply personal theatrical experience. Jake’s Gift, the internationally acclaimed, multi-award-winning Canadian solo play, arrives at the Cargill Theatre as part of our Special Presentations series, proudly sponsored by AdMax Billboards.
Written and performed by Julia Mackey and directed by Dirk Van Stralen, this 65-minute masterpiece (presented without intermission) delivers an unforgettable exploration of legacy, love, and healing. While the piece tackles profound historical loss, audiences will discover a surprisingly funny, heartwarming, and tender story that resonates across all generations.
The Story: An Unlikely Friendship on Sacred Ground
Jake’s Gift recounts the poignant journey of Jake, a Canadian Second World War veteran who reluctantly returns to Normandy, France, for the 60th anniversary of D-Day. While walking the quiet, windswept shores of Juno Beach, Jake crosses paths with Isabelle, a bright, precocious ten-year-old girl from the nearby French village.
Isabelle’s inquisitive nature, innocence, and charming persistence gently disarm the gruff old soldier. Her friendship challenges Jake to confront long-buried ghosts that he has carried for six decades—most painfully, the wartime loss of his older brother Chester, a gifted young musician whose life ended far too soon. Through their simple, unexpected bond, the play transforms the sweeping magnitude of wartime history into an intimate, human story centered around a single soldier’s grave.
A Love Letter to a Passing Generation
The inspiration for Jake’s Gift began in June 2004, when playwright and performer Julia Mackey traveled to Normandy for the 60th anniversary ceremonies. She spent a week walking the beaches, exploring the countryside, and interviewing dozens of Canadian veterans—many returning to France for the first time since their service. Moved by their vulnerability and heroism, Mackey wrote the play as a heartfelt tribute to the men and women who gave so much for global freedom.
Since founding Juno Productions with director Dirk Van Stralen in 2007, Mackey has toured the play to over 265 communities across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The company has performed the production directly in Normandy—in both English and French—during the 70th, 73rd, 75th, and most recently the 80th anniversary of D-Day in June 2024. In recognition of her remarkable cultural contribution and dedication to veterans, the Governor General awarded Mackey the prestigious Meritorious Service Cross in January 2024.
Director Dirk Van Stralen deliberately keeps the production honest and unadorned. With no elaborate projections, grand choreography, or heavy sound effects, the staging puts the spotlight entirely on pure storytelling and emotional authenticity. The result is an immediate, powerful performance that bypasses broad political statements to speak straight to the universal heart of loss and remembrance.
