Pro Coro Canada, established in 1981 by Canadian conductor Michel Marc Gervais, has solidified its reputation as one of Canada’s premier professional chamber choirs. Based in Edmonton, Alberta, this ensemble of 24 voices is celebrated for its diverse repertoire, spanning from early Renaissance pieces to contemporary avant-garde works. Throughout its history, Pro Coro Canada has been under the baton of esteemed choral conductors, including Anders Eby from Sweden, Søren Hansen from Denmark, Agnes Grossmann from Austria, and American Richard Sparks. In 2012, Swiss-born Michael Zaugg took the helm as Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, ushering in a new era of artistic excellence.

A strong advocate for contemporary choral music, Pro Coro Canada has commissioned and premiered over 50 works, with a significant emphasis on Canadian composers. The choir’s commitment to innovation is further exemplified by its composer-in-residence program, which has featured internationally renowned composers such as Alberto Grau, Ugis Praulins and Paul Mealor. Beyond performances, Pro Coro Canada is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of choral artists through its Emerging Artist Program, and through community engagement, collaborating with various community choirs and serving as faculty in the Choral Art program at the Banff Centre from 2018-2020.

In 2021, Pro Coro Canada celebrated its 40th anniversary, marking four decades of choral excellence and contribution to Canada’s cultural landscape.  Under Michael Zaugg’s leadership, Pro Coro Canada continues to captivate audiences with its pure, floating voices and impeccable intonation, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of Canada’s choral community.
